“After my mum died, everything I knew fell apart in one month. Now, I struggle with abandonment.” – Whitney ‘Nomy’ Chukwu sits #WithChude

Media entrepreneur and host of the viral talkshow #WithChude, Chude Jideonwo sits down with Whitney ‘Nomy’ Chukwu, Big Brother Naija Season 11 contestant and fashion entrepreneur, for an unfiltered conversation about identity, ambition, grief, family and her controversial experience in the Big Brother Naija house. Described by Jideonwo as “the most confident woman you will see today,” Nomy reflects on the experience that left her traumatised, her eventual disqualification and the decision not to change herself simply to become more acceptable to the housemates or viewers. “I wasn’t in the Big Brother house to make friends, I came into the house to win,” she says.

Nomy takes Jideonwo through the journey that began with receiving her Big Brother lockdown letter while in Milan, where she was building her fashion career, and led her into one of Nigeria’s most watched reality television experiences. She speaks about choosing Big Brother as a platform to grow her fashion brand, the challenges of competing in an increasingly saturated fashion industry, and the psychological impact of being made to wear the “Benchwarmer” vest. For Nomy, the vest became more than a label, it made her feel less like a housemate and disconnected from her sense of identity. She also explains why she never entered the house seeking approval, and why her refusal to perform likability eventually created friction with other housemates.

Beyond the spectacle of Big Brother Naija, Nomy opens up about the family wounds that existed long before television cameras entered her life. She speaks about growing up without a relationship with her father, losing her mother at a young age and the abandonment issues that followed. “I have abandonment issues, and the family unit I once knew was torn apart after I lost my mom,” she says, reflecting on grief, healing and why she has never felt compelled to reconnect with her father. She also reveals what a fan told her after her disqualification and recalls returning to life outside the house without even having participated in a Twitter Space, a reminder of just how quickly reality television can turn a private person into a public conversation.

Nomy also reflects on the state of Big Brother Naija, acknowledging that the show has not generated the same level of buzz it once did. “I agree that Big Brother Naija hasn’t quite buzzed… people are not necessarily focused on watching the show or enjoying it,” she says. But even as the public debates her time in the house, Nomy remains unapologetically herself. “I was disqualified from the Big Brother Naija house for a reason completely different from why Erica, Tacha and CeeC were disqualified,” she says. In a conversation about fame, identity, fashion entrepreneurship, family, grief and the price of refusing to become someone else for an audience, Nomy makes one thing clear: even when the story makes her the villain, she still sees herself as the main character.
