#MadeinNigeria: Chude Jideonwo on How to Build Premium Nigerian Content for the Future
May 2, 2025 Dorcas

For over 25 years, Chude Jideonwo has played a defining role in shaping Nigeria’s media. From publishing his first novel, ‘His Father’s Knickers’ as a teenager to producing for major shows like New Dawn with Funmi Iyanda, his journey has been intentional. He co-founded Red Media Group, which birthed platforms like YNaija, Red Media Africa, The Future Awards Africa, and StateCraft.

After battling depression, Chude stepped away from Red and founded Joy, Inc., a company focused on emotional well-being for young Africans. His show, #WithChude, reflects this mission, featuring guests like Joke Silva and Funke Akindele. With a growing audience and paid subscriptions, the platform emphasizes emotional truth and dignity in storytelling.

In this interview, Chude explains the need for #WithChude Live as a space for softness, honesty, and healing in Nigerian culture. He critiques how scarcity has turned introspection and emotional wellness into luxuries, and he urges a shift toward depth and vulnerability — even in faith.

He also shares how his mother, one of his greatest influences, nurtured his spirit and protected his sensitivity from a young age, shaping his values and approach to life.

Chude reflects on past challenges, including the early struggles with YNaija. Although a lack of funding and confidence stalled its growth, the platform is now being rebuilt under new leadership with renewed purpose.

He believes the future of media lies in direct connection with people, not brands. Through  Joy, Inc., and his storytelling work, he is creating platforms that prioritize meaning and impact.

In five years, he hopes to lead a global movement of African creators telling soulful, transformative stories — inspired by the legacy of Oprah Winfrey.
